Flashback! – And just like that, awards szn is over. Currently holding an 8.6 out of 10-star rating on IMDb (with more than 200,000 votes), a 99% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 4.6 out of 5 on letterboxd, PARASITE was undoubtedly the underdog-turned-awards season darling. Here’s a look back at some of the highlights this awards season featuring our fave creatives who deserved every bit of their award nominations and wins:
A Parasite’s Guide to the Oscars: a Throwback and Reverse Countdown
It seems just like yesterday when PARASITE first made headlines for winning the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the regular dose of standing ovation(s) its received since then. Newsflash: they stayed winning. PARASITE crew (and the rest of Bong-hive) started 2020 with a bang! from January’s Golden Globes to the more recent Oscars. Just in case you missed it: PARASITE currently has a total of 199 wins and 182 nominations! (yes! really! including the 4 Oscar wins from Sunday)!! Here’s a quick trip down memory lane from the 2020 awards season:
5. Golden Globes
Awards season kicked off in full swing with The Globes the first Sunday of the new year. Awkwafina made history as the first actress of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her performance in The Farewell. That same night, PARASITE took home the Globe for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language. A double win for Asians!
4. Critics’ Choice
The Critics have spoken. The following Sunday, PARASITE was once again chosen. This time as the Critics’ Choice for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director for Bong Joon-ho. Swipe here to see the other nominees.
3. Official Oscar nominations
By the time the Academy Award nominations were released by mid-January, predictions made rounds on the internet that PARASITE could make history with it likely winning both the Best International Feature Film and Best Motion Picture of the Year!
Here are the rest of the Oscar nominees including FOR SAMA with a Best Documentary nomination and Kazu Hiro, with a Best Makeup nomination for BOMBSHELL (who also won Sunday).
2. SAG Awards and BAFTA wins!
Then, the following week there was the SAG Awards’ standing ovation, and the week after that, were its BAFTA wins across the pond! Truly an international win!

History is made! By Oscar Sunday, the scene was set for one PARASITE to sweep all the awards. Winning a total of 4 Oscars out of its 6 nominations, it was also the first foreign-language film to win Best Picture of the year (along with its Best International Feature film win).
